Missing signage—like the 51% sign or Health Risks warning—is one of the most common TABC violations during inspections.

During a TABC inspection, one of the first things an agent will look for is your signage. Texas law is not vague about this: specific signs must be posted in specific locations.

If you are preparing for your annual compliance report or just a routine audit, use this checklist to ensure your walls are talking to the TABC the way they should.

1. In Public View (Employees & Customers)

These signs must be posted in a location where they are easily visible to both your staff and your guests. A common best practice is to have a dedicated "Compliance Board" near the main entrance or by the cash register.

  • TABC Permit: Your actual mixed beverage or wine and malt beverage permit must be displayed.

  • Sales Tax Permit: Proof that you are registered with the Comptroller.

  • Public Information / Complaint Sign: This sign provides the public with contact information to file a complaint against a TABC-licensed location.

  • Human Trafficking Sign: This sign is critical for public safety and provides information on recognizing and reporting trafficking.

2. At Restroom Exits

The placement of the Health Risks Warning Sign is strictly regulated. It must be posted at the exit (egress) of each men’s and women’s restroom.

⚠️ Compliance Alert: Do not just tape this sign above the sink. The law specifically requires it to be visible as the person is leaving the restroom. Ensure it is placed on the back of the door or on the wall immediately next to the exit frame.

3. At the Entrance

Before a customer even steps inside, they need to know your firearm policy.

  • Red Handgun Warning Sign: Commonly known as the "51% Sign," this red sign must be posted at the entrance of your location. It informs the public that it is a felony for a concealed handgun license holder to carry a handgun on the premises of a business that derives 51% or more of its income from the sale of alcohol for on-premises consumption.

Where to Get These Signs?

You don't need to design them yourself. The TABC provides downloadable PDF versions of all required signs on their website.
